COVID 19 Update and How to Support Your Immune System

Dear Natural Back Health Family

First things first, due to concern over health and safety regarding the Coronavirus/COVID-19, The Wisdom Centre has completely closed its doors. Therefore, I am unable to continue serving you until it is safe to reopen again and return to regular life. Please be aware that recommendations are changing day by day as we all deal with this situation.

My apologies to all my clients who have appointments scheduled in the coming weeks.

I would like to take this chance to remind you all to continue with all the HSE guidelines (regular hand washing, social distancing, respiratory etiquette etc) to help not just you and your loved ones, but all the members of your community.

If you are unwell with a fever and/or cough, follow HSE guidelines, call the HSE helpline for advice (Callsave: 1850 24 1850 Phone: 041 6850300) or contact your local GP for advice. The guidelines now state that if you have a fever and/or cough you should stay at home regardless of your travel or contact history. If you are concerned about the welfare or safety of an individual you can also call the HSE for advice on this.

On top of continuing to follow HSE guidelines with respiratory etiquette and regular hand washing I would like to suggest and encourage you to continue looking after your health.

In particular your immune system

Think of your immune system like a fortress. Any fortress worth its weight in gold will be strong and robust. And that is exactly what you want your immune system to be: strong and robust. So when anything comes knocking on your fortress door, not only will you be ready, you will have fuel in the tank …

Your immune system is a thing of beauty. Every time you are exposed to a germ, bacteria, virus, fungus etc. your immune system learns and grows. Your immune system creates a natural immunity which works for you when exposed again in the future. Even 50 years from now, it will still have it on file! Amazing no?!

So right now it is important to strengthen and support your immune system to handle any increased demands. This will serve you well into your future. Plus, by keeping you and your family healthy, you are lessening the burden for our hospitals to care for those who really need it.

Many of us are feeling powerless in the face of this new virus. By putting some energy and focus into supporting a strong, robust immune system it may help you feel more empowered and in control.

Keep doing these things:

Sleep

Sleep is when your body does its repair, recovery and housework. So make sure you are getting good quality and quantity of sleep. Perhaps during this period aim to add 30-60 minutes extra sleep to your routine. Learn more here.

Food

Prioritise nutritious whole foods. Your immune system loves a rich variety of nutrients. Vitamins D, C, A, minerals zinc and selenium are important players in a strong immune system. Reflect on how your diet has been up until now. You may consider taking a supplement on top of a well balanced diet.

Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.

Try to avoid or minimise refined, processed foods. If you think of your immune cells like a mini army, would you prefer to send them to the front line on a can of fizzy pop and a processed pizza or marching on highly nutritious food and well hydrated?

Many natural health practitioners will also suggest herbal and homeopathic remedies to support your health and immune system. Supplements like elderberry syrup, olive leaf extract, Echinacea and adaptogens are known to be immune boosting. I recommend consulting with a qualified professional before self-supplementing as they will be able to advise you on the most appropriate dose for your needs.

Exercise

Keep moving! Exercise can enhance immune function (plus all the other good side effects we know exercise has!).

However, getting some exercise right now means some creativity. Your gym or swimming pool is closed. However, you can still go out for a solo walk, hike or cycle (or with a friend/loved one while maintaining correct social distancing and within the assigned radius of your home). Check out this excellent article here on staying safe while exercising outside during this period of time.

Have you got a gym ball gathering dust in the attic? Have you got a resistance band at the back of a drawer? Check out a super routine here. I have spotted some great resources for online videos at home … Some studios are even streaming their yoga and Pilates classes! Fantastic!!

Mental health and self care

With all this upheaval comes uncertainty. Many of us are feeling anxious. Firstly, that is perfectly ok. The COVID-19 virus is a serious issue, but it is important that we all understand the facts, do not listen to unfounded rumors, and do what is best for our families and communities. Getting stressed out about it all actually dampens your immune system. So work on staying calm and in the present moment. Practice self-care. Which simply means doing what calms you, relaxes you and makes you feel happy.

So how about these …

Read a book (I know I have about a dozen waiting patiently on me!).

SING! Singing switches on the calm side of your nervous system. Learn more.

Call/Skype a loved one.

Meditate (Some studios are offering free ZOOM meditations during this time and I will be doing some short guided relaxation live videos on Facebook).

Get out in the back garden and get lost in some potting, planting, weeding.

Journal all this craziness (it could be a best seller in years to come!!).

girl, woman, music, listening, sound, mantras, health
Listen to music (try some calming therapeutic music).

Whatever helps. And if you need support with this, reach out. Share your needs with others. We are all in the same boat!

Finally, getting regular body work to support a balanced, aligned system also helps your immune system

Check out some research on this. So as soon as regular life returns I want to see you back in for your next appointment and “tune up”.

In this time of panic around us, it can be confusing and unsettling. The Coronavirus is without doubt a serious issue and an upheaval to our lives and our communities. However, continuing to focus on health and happiness, keeping a cool head and maintaining rational behaviour can support us all to get through this. Level heads prevail.

Listen to your body, nourish it, slow down and stay responsible.

For now, I’m here for you in a virtual sense. I will continue to serve and support your body’s health, alignment and balance with regular updates on social media. Come say HI!
